Today we announce a challenge to all of our readers:  Consume at least one cup of homemade, high quality bone broth a day between now and Valentine’s Day to improve your health. One person who accepts our challenge will win a one-year subscription to the Menu Mailer and Recipe Archive!

Along the way, we’ll be working to sneak bone broth into even more recipes and share our findings.  We hope you’ll share your favorite recipes, tips and tricks with our readers. I’ll blog about what we ate that had bone broth in it and highlight other’s ideas and recipes, too.

Making bone broth is easy. It takes a little time but it doesn’t require much hands-on work.

Beef Stock
Chicken Stock

How do you like to make your bone broth? Have you found your family enjoys bone broth better when you make it a certain way?

For my family, roasting the bones when I make beef stock is a must. I can easily get them to drink it straight if the broth comes from roasted bones.

Want to join in?  Take our pledge!  Pledge to consume at least 7 cups of bone broth a week as part of your regular diet.  Scroll past the recipes and leave a comment at the bottom of this page with how you will join in on this challenge. Then join us on our forum to discuss, share tips and recipes and more. We’ll share the best tips and info on the blog.

One person who takes the pledge will win a one-year subscription to the Menu Mailer. We will hold the drawing for the winner on November 30, 2011. You must post your entry in the comments below. Only one entry will be accepted per person.

If you have a good blog post about bone broths or a recipe on your website, join our linky party below and post a link back on your post to our linky party. Please observe standard etiquette by editing your post to link back and only posting info about or recipes that contain bone broth.

Finally found an affordable source for local meats, so I can make good-tasting bone broth. My dh and I are now hooked, following the GAPS intro diet. We will definitely pledge to eat at least a cup of broth (probably more) every day. I need to try roasting my beef soup bones next.

This is so cool since I’m making some chicken broth from an organic whole chicken I roasted in the crock pot. I’m pledging that I will consume 1 cup of bone broth everyday from now till Valentine’s day. I will most likely be making mine in the crock pot each time.

I began this today! Great challenge. It seems to me that my immune system is really not strong at all the last couple of years because I have digestion issues. I am really looking forward to healing the digestion problems as well! Blessings to all! ~Colleen~

So is this the place to enter in this contest? I accept the challenge to consume 1 Cup of homemade bone broth a day. I find roasting the beef bones to be too much hassle … since your family especially likes it that way I will have to try it.

I’ll take the pledge to consume atleast 7 cups/week of bone broth! I just finished scooping the fat off some homemade chicken broth made from a local, pastured chicken (SA, Tx…woot!) made in a crock, which btw is the **easiest** way to get all the meat off the carcass and the the crock pot is already there w/ all the flavorful onions!

Ooo, I can do this one! Here’s how I pull off eating chicken stock on a regular basis. I have four children and homeschool, and lunches have always been a point of drudgery for me. This year, we hit upon a great idea. On the weekend, I make a big batch of soup (usually with chicken stock) and put it in the crockpot on the Keep Warm setting. Every day, we just scoop out a bowl of soup for lunch, and I make a quick batch of english muffins or pita bread from my refrigerated sourdough. It’s easy, healthy, and economical!

I read your weekly mailer about making chicken stock, Thank you that was very helpful! I have a question about rancid fats. You mentioned to refrigerate the broth and skim the top off because of concern of the fat becoming rancid when cooked for that long. What do I do with it? throw it? And how do you know if your fat has gone rancid? And a guide for buying nuts? I haven’t read nourishing traditions yet (I have the next available copy saved from the library) but I wanted to know off hand what are some sound advice regarding rancid fats besides most vegetable fats like canola and hydrogenated oil junk.

Thanks for hearing my question I would love to hear advice from anyone here! 🙂

Jacqueline, I’m glad you found the eCourse helpful! If fat goes rancid, it is best thrown out. I do recommend that if you make stock and cook it for over 7-8 hours that you throw the fat away.

A fat is rancid if it’s been cooked for a very long time, has been heated to the point of smoking or smells or tastes off. When you get NT and can read it, Sally has good info about it in there.

As more of the eCourse arrives in your inbox, you’ll read a lot about fats. Nuts will come later in the series. You want to look for fresh nuts that smell good. You want raw and unheated, except for cashews. Cashews must be heated to get them out of the shell, so truly raw cashews don’t exist.

I pledge to consume 7 cups of bone broth each week through Valentine’s Day 🙂 I will try to do this by making more soups, and possibly just drinking it as a warm tasty drink. Getting more bone broth in our diet has been a goal of mine anyway, so thank you for the challenge!

Best thing I could be doing right now! My baby’s guess date to be born is Valentines Day so I think having a cup of bone broth everyday until then would be one of the best gifts I could give my baby! I appreciate and accept this challenge! Thank you! I just drank a cup of broth before reading this post- So I’m already on track! ( I had one yesterday and the day before as well!)

I used to make bone broth all the time then got away from it. Just got some soup bones and some short ribs out of the freezer to thaw. I will roast and then make my bone broth. Alas I won’t be able to start until tomorrow, but I accept the challenge and will go until February 14. Hopefully by then it will be a good habit and I can continue. Thanks for getting me back on track.

I would love to join! I feel a bit guilty as I’m already drinking far more than a cup a day so it won’t be much of a challenge for me but I need to work on getting everyone in my family to drink at least a cup a day too so that’s what I’ll pledge to for the challenge part as well as continuing my current several cup a day bone broth habits.

Count me in for the challenge!

I must confess I’ve fallen off the broth wagon for a few weeks (travelling, etc) .. but I’ve taken a cup of \Chicken Tea\ (as my preschooler calls it) every morning for many months – it’s the only way I can enjoy taking the extra (sea)salt my Dr has ‘ordered’ me to consume.
I love making chicken broth based soups, cooking my rice in it, and adding it to casseroles. I got some beef marrow bones this week from the butcher and am going to roast them tonight and make beef broth tomorrow.. I am quite excited for my first beef broth! (I mastered chicken broth a while back! I love it!)

I learned how to make broth from scraps from a Japanese movie- I had no idea so many people were doing this as well! 🙂 It really is so much more delicious and soooo cheep! No more canned soups! All home-made and frozen. 🙂 Excited to see other ways of doing it. 🙂
