This week KerryAnn answers more questions about the Pickl-It, including whether the Pickl-It should be used for drinks like kefir and kombucha and picking out which size jar to purchase. We’ll return next week with another Video Q&A.

The pickl-it recipes I’ve seen recommend 3-5 days at room temp and then transfer to the fridge. It seems like from that point they can be eaten. But I read somewhere on your site that you ferment for 12 weeks. How do you know when a ferment in the pickl-it is ready to eat?

Lela, the post on Friday will detail what to look for so you know when to transfer to the fridge and when to eat.

Do you know if ARC jars can be fitted with the top portion of Pickl-It? I have two ARC jars with the same type of lid as the Pickl-It (without the airlock system, of course).

Cheryl, I’m sorry but I’m not familiar with those jars. If you could turn up lid dimensions in an online search, that would be your best bet to find out.

I called Pickl-It. She said the conversion kit might work, but I’d have to compare the dimensions, which I haven’t done yet. Also, she said that several years ago (maybe as much as 9 or 10 years ago), when she was researching jars, ARC stopped manufacturing them at their U.S. plant and started manufacturing in China. As I understand it, they’re still a French company, but I have no idea if they produce their jars solely in China or also in other countries. Anyway, I bought my ARC jars two or three years ago, so there’s a good chance they were made in China with some creepy substances.

šŸ™ Ugh. Yeah, I avoid things made in China, too. Such poor regulation you don’t know if you’re getting something safe or not.

Thanks so much for doing this, KA. I never watch video blogs, but I have been watching these. I had blown off buying pickl-it’s because they are so expensive and put some sauerkraut in a mason jar. It’s been there since Thanksgiving, so I took it out today. The top half was not good. I ordered a pickl-it to try and have some pickles in it right now. I plan to order a bunch when finances allow.

Yay! I’m SO anxious to get my new ones! I have lots of plans to make goodies as the summer produce starts rolling in.
