Ladies, if you’re reading this, call over your significant other.
Come on fellows, admit it. Who amongst us doesn’t like a good steak, an awesome burger, or a significant helping of chicken wings? I know I do. And why shouldn’t I? Who says that as someone who lives in a house with the chief traditional foods cook and bottle washer I can’t have those things? Now don’t let me lose you here as you drift into visions of chicken wings cooking in a big vat of hydrogenated oils.
For a long time, modern day food hawkers have grilled us, pardon the pun, with the idea that convenience is king and it’s ok to eat this stuff out of a bag or from your local grill. Face it, do we really associate traditional foods with good eating? I dare say that most of you that are starting to dip your toes in the world of traditional foods have some misgivings. You probably think you’ll be eating nothing but hummus and organ meat wrapped in corn husks or something like that. Don’t be tempted by speed dial 3 for your favorite pizza delivery, but we’ll talk about that one day soon.
I’ll be the first to admit that I thought I was about to be subjected to a diet of simulated cardboard smothered in all the condiments that I thought I couldn’t stand. Anytime we are introduced to something new and especially when it’s “not the way momma did it”, we want to resist and go for speed dial 3 again. We tell our taste buds to rebel no matter what the food we are about to be served may actually taste like. We grew up with whatever the brand of the day was for our favorite product and that is just how it is supposed to be.
Or is it?
Let’s think about this for a minute. What did we do before that item came along? Watch out, here it comes: how did mom actually come to using some of this stuff anyway? Convenience more often than not, but that is its own topic for another day.
Back to the wings. Can you really eat that stuff and abide by a Traditional Foods diet? Yes. You just need to educate yourself about how to do that and who better to help you with that than Cooking Traditional Foods. Don’t look in the freezer case and dare I say it, replace speed dial 3 with your mother-in-law’s number. It’s going to take effort, but this is your chance to contribute to the menu.
If you want to eat these things, it’s going to take some effort initially to learn how, but you will not be sorry. In fact, it will be fun. And the irony of it all, you can invite your mom over for supper with pride, knowing she is about to enjoy some of the best food life has to offer. Go ahead, there’s an awesome wing sauce out there that is also nourishing.
Get in the kitchen and find out how you can work with the woman in your life to develop the things you love in a way that works with the nutritional profile your household lives by. Need help? That’s what we’re here for, so just ask.
Stay tuned. We’ll be doing a series of posts soon on some of my Traditional Food versions of “man foods”.

I will say that my man is VERY happy with the TF meat I am serving him 🙂 In fact he agrees that eating TF is the good stuff; nothing better than a home cooked meal with plenty of bacon grease or butter, lol. Far from feeling deprived, he can’t believe his luck.
Good topic! We’re transitioning from suburban life into sustainable farming, and I need to start feeding my husband high calorie energy foods that are really nutrient rich so that he has lots of energy for more labor intensive work. I’d love to hear some of your ideas for some delicious, hearty “man food”.
