If you have followed Intentionally Domestic long-term, you know that I’ve had some significant struggles with my health over the last seven years. One of those challenges was unexplained weight gain that came after a miscarriage last year. My diet didn’t change, but we assume my hormones did, leaving me with a weight gain we couldn’t explain by what was going in my mouth. I wasn’t eating more than normal or different things and I started packing on pounds. I gained 30 pounds in a short space of time, mostly in my stomach, and cellulite appeared, only to later have the weight gain end with no explanation, and again, no changes in my behaviors.
Recently, I’ve been talking about the Ultimate Body Applicator and the Defining Gel that I’ve been using to tighten my skin and reduce the appearnce of the cellulite that showed up during that weight gain. Seeing those results with my cellulite greatly lessening, my stretch makrs shrinking and my belly button returning to where it should be finally notivated me to once again begin to try to shift about 25 pounds off that I wanted to get rid of, but I felt complacent about. I didn’t have the motivation to keep going on a restricted diet because a previous round with low-carb didn’t take it off. Shifteing off this weight is one of the pieces of the puzzle that I need to better my health.
Almost three weeks ago, I went back to an eating style where I’m not counting carbs, but I call it “lower carb” because I’m not eating sugars or grains, just an abundance of meat, fat, lower carb fruits, coconut, raw dairy, some seeds, plenty of spices and non-starchy veggies. I have a small amount of beans on rare occasion. It’s basically paleo plus dairy. With each meal, I try to make sure that half of my plate is non-starchy veggies, half is meat, and enough fat is used to make the meal palpable. I am drinking plenty of fluids in between meals, about half my body weight per day in ounces.
In that time, I have already had 8 pounds come off. I am eating until I am full, so no skimping on portion size. I am enjoying my meals, but they are still allowing me to loose weight. This has provided me with great motivation to stay on the eating style and not cheat, because I am seeing results. However, I’m concerned about seeing my metabolism slow down over the long-term as it is easy with this type of diet to slip into eating too few carbs on a regular basis.
My concern, as always, isn’t with eating too many carbs, but with not eating enough. I can easily find myself having only consumed 20-40 carbs a day on a paleo diet for long periods, I my past experience tells me that it isn’t good for my body. It gives short-term weight loss but it’s counter-productive long-term, so it isn’t the permanent solution to help me reach my goals.
I have heard the buzz going around on Trim Healthy Mama, but I haven’t yet been able to read the entire, huge, 350-page book due to being so busy on a couple of different projects you’ll be hearing about soon. I’m about one-third of the way through the book, and I’ve just reached the recipe section. I hope to be able to spend more time with the book over the next couple of weeks to really grasp it all, as I have met a number of people who are having success with it when low-carb didn’t work for them over the long-term.
While I do recognize that I have an issue with insulin resistance and I’m still recovering from adrenal fatigue, I’m concerned about the potential for low-carb causing my metabolism to slow down over time. That is what is attracting me to the idea of only using one type of fuel at a time for my body, but switching back and forth between the two. When you’re constantly switching things up, I believe your metabolism will be less likely to go into a lull. So I’m going to read and review the book and possibly try out the diet to see if this could be what I need.
Still, weight loss isn’t my goal, per se, so much as gaining more health. I wish to be healthy, no matter my weight. Skinny isn’t the goal. Being healthier than I am is my goal. Today, I am healthier than I was when I developed celiac in 2006. My desire is to reach my 40th birthday coming up in a few years in a healthier state and be more fit and active than I was at 20. That is a goal that I can obtain if I continue on my current path and find a way to eat quality, nourishing food without gaining weight.
My other concern right now is that I recently took a spill off of a set of stairs, landed on gravel and damaged one of my knees. I’m now struggling to get it to quit making these awful noises. There is no pain, but I’m suddenly hearing noises out of my knee that I didn’t know were possible. I’m using bone broth, gelatin and other foods known to assist healing. I’m also being easy on it and I’m careful how I stand, sit and lay. For the time being, I have decided to not re-start an exercise program until I can make sure there is no mechanical damage to my knee. I wouldn’t want to inadvertently make the damage worse.
