Good, Better, Best- Choosing Meats

March 8, 2011 by KerryAnn 1 Comment

As I stated with my first post in this series, I fully recognize that some of you have very tight budgets or only have access to mega-marts due to your locations. Others will have the funds and availability to choose the best of the best. Either way, this post isn’t to condemn someone who can’t pick the best of every option, it is to help you make the best decision you can with what you have, where you are.

This week’s installment is on choosing meats. This post is to help you decide what is the best option for your budget. This posting is my opinion, and after research, you might reach a different conclusion. If you do, please comment and share what you found and your reasoning. I’m always open to changing my opinion and updating this post if new or different information comes along.

The Choices

Best– Locally grown, 100% pastured, organic or ‘not-certified but organic practice’

Better– 100% pastured, organic or ‘not-certified but organic practice’ [Read more…] about Good, Better, Best- Choosing Meats

‘Crocodile’ Nuggets

June 23, 2011 by KerryAnn 17 Comments

It’s been a crazy two days.   My kids are restless and can’t stay focused.   It’s hot out and rainy.  They’re trapped in the house instead of being able to go out and play.

They have been running amok.  In my house.  Specifically, they’ve been chasing each other in a loop through my living room, dining room and kitchen while squealing like only elementary kids can.  They won’t even sit still to watch Nat Geo on Netflix, which is my normal fall-back that’s assured to get them to stay put.  The beloved special on crocodiles that DS asks to watch daily isn’t working.  Nope, not happening.  Fifteen minutes into the program, they’re doing laps through my workspace at the top of their lungs.  Again.

Today is normally my kitchen day, the day I spend baking, doing cooking projects and the like.  I also needed to clean out my fridge.  I’ve got vanilla pudding and yogurt going, two different things in the oven and I’m juggling a third.

They’re crazy.  They’ve pushed me into crazy.  For lunch today I decided to pull out all of the stops I could come up with.

Turkey Tantrums

October 27, 2011 by KerryAnn 9 Comments

Yesterday began the fifth annual test-half-a-million-recipes-in-the-run-up-to-the-holiday-Menu-Mailers marathon that we have every year in the Foster household.

Truth be told, we don’t do Thanksgiving at Thanksgiving.  We don’t do Christmas at Christmas.  Why?  Because by the time the holiday rolls around, I’ve tested so many turkey, dressing and side dish recipes that if I have to cook them one more time, I’ll puke.  The kids are plotting full-scale revolt and beg me to fix anything but.  My husband grits out a smile every time yet another slab of turkey lands on the dinner table in front of him.

I appreciate my mom.  When Turkey day finally rolls around, she buys a big ham and fusses over what side dishes she wants to fix.  My contribution is to buy some paper plates, slap some green beans and sweet potatoes on the table and call it a meal.  I’m done.

Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la Flop

Yesterday, we began with the turkey breast (I can’t get whole turkeys locally yet) and sweet potato side dish.  I was determined to ignore that I was sleep-deprived.  I was just fine.  I was up to the task.

I can cook turkeys in my sleep by now!
