Healing the Gut: Digestive Enzymes

The day I took my first dose of digestive enzymes at breakfast was the day my 24/7 diarrhea stopped and my nausea lessened for the first time in the afternoon and evening.  The next day, after being diarrhea-free for 24 hours, I had my first solid bowel movement in months.  It did not stop the morning nausea, but it greatly lessened the nausea for the rest of the day.  They were truly the beginning of my recovery.

What are digestive enzymes?  Simply put, they break down the food in your gut so your body can absorb the nutrition from it.  When you have gut damage, your body often doesn’t make the enzymes necessary to digest your food.  This further contributes to the vicious cycle of food intolerance, as the undigested particles are now more likely to cross the damaged barrier of your gut and cause problems.  No where is this more apparent than with caseomorphin.   Studies have shown it to be as behaviorally problematic, addictive, analgesic and disruptive to the system as morphine.    A quick pub med search will turn up lots of articles and studies.  Gluten behaves the same way in the body.

More Evidence on the Benefits of Probiotics

A recent study by Javier Bravo at the University College in Cork, Ireland looked at the response of rats fed Lactobacillus rhamnosus, a commonly available probiotic.  The study showed that feeding this strain of probiotic to mice changed their behavior to the better; the mice showed less anxiety, depression and stress response.  The study was entitled Ingestion of Lactobacillus strain regulates emotional behavior and central GABA receptor expression in a mouse via the vagus nerve.

Discover Magazine says of his study:

Bravo found that his mice, after regularly eating Lactobacillus, were more likely to spend time in the exposed parts of a maze (a common test for anxiety symptoms) than those who ate bacteria-free meals. They were also less likely to drift motionlessly when plopped into water (a common test for depressive symptoms). And during stressful situations, they built up lower levels of stress hormones.

The Wall Street Journal had an article about Bravo’s study entitled The Yogurt Made Me Do It.  The article states:

How did the (probiotic) induce these changes? The answer involves GABA, a neurotransmitter that reduces the activity of neurons. When Mr. Bravo looked at the brains of the mice, he found that those fed probiotics had more GABA receptors in areas associated with memory and the regulation of emotions. (This change mimics the effects of popular antianxiety medications in humans.)

More and more studies show the benefit of probiotic bacteria to heal your gut, strengthen your immune system, keep your bowels regular, help control emotions and stress and much more.  I don’t think science has touched the tip of the benefits probiotics have on our bodies.

L-Glutamine

L-Glutamine shows great promise in scientific research for healing your gut. It was one leg of my ‘trinity,’ along with digestive enzymes and pascalite clay that formed the basis of the supplements I used to heal my gut.  The other critical factor was massive doses of probiotics via food.

Glutamine is an amino acid that includes synthesizing protein and providing energy among its duties in the body. Multiple studies have shown it speeds healing and reduces healing time after intestinal surgery (another study). It specifically targets healing intestinal permeability and healing/preventing infection. It is being studied for its ability to help cancer patients heal from both the cancer itself and the side effects of conventional cancer treatment.  It also benefits the kidneys, but should be avoided if you have Reyes Syndrome, kidney problems or cirrhosis of the liver.  Some medical professionals recommend not supplementing with glutamine if you have any liver problems.

You Are NOT What You Eat: Chicken Stock

June 15, 2011 by KerryAnn 12 Comments

One of the refrains heard repeated often in the world of traditional foods is ‘you are what you eat.’

Unfortunately, this is wrong.

You are not what you eat.  You are what you ABSORB.  You can pour all of the highest quality food into your body and if you can’t absorb it, it is being wasted.  Depending on what your body isn’t absorbing, you can suffer a whole host of bad effects.  I lost 2.5 inches off of my height when I was ill thanks to the inability to absorb multiple nutrients, including calcium and D3.

Gut health is critical.  If you can’t absorb the nutrients you’re eating, you’re going to suffer. [Read more…] about You Are NOT What You Eat: Chicken Stock
