Six weeks ago, I posted about my decision to start using magnesium oil here. I’ve been extremely pleased and will continue using magnesium oil long-term, and I have had the unusual but lovely side effect of magnesium oil feet peeling! This has given me baby soft feet without any spa treatments.

It’s now been about six weeks since I started using transdermal Health and Wisdom magnesium oil. I’m currently using 1/4 tsp of the oil a day, diluted into extra water.   I decided to go with the transdermal oil because I don’t have a good reaction to oral supplementation.

I’ve been alternating where I apply it over my stomach, thighs, love handles, arms and calves and I’m still having good success with it. You can read my first post about beginning the oil here and I will be switching to Life Flo Magnesium Flakes soon to be able to make the oil myself for a lower cost.

My Six-Week Mag Oil Results

First, the relaxed attitude and improved sleep I initially noted have continued.  I’ve now had a second cycle since beginning the oil and I’ve had another easy, pain-free cycle that was just about symptomless.  I’m definitely NOT complaining there!

I haven’t changed anything else I was doing in the way of supplements or foods, so I must attribute the change to the magnesium oil. If for no other reason, this improvement alone has convinced me to continue on the oil long-term.

I continue to have odorless sweat, another big plus. The funny gut noises have resolved now that my body has adjusted and it happened without any changes to my digestion. The digestive upset I get with the supplements hasn’t been an issue with the transdermal application.

Magnesium Oil Feet Peeling!

I’ve debated for a while whether or not to share the one really weird side effect I noticed. Maybe one of my readers can explain why this has happened. I’m having magnesium oil feet peeling.

After about four weeks of continuous use, my palms and the soles of my feet started peeling.  They sluffed off completely to reveal healthy, pink skin underneath.  There was no pain, cracking, bleeding or anything else that was a bad sign.  The skin just fell off in extremely thick layers and revealed nice, healthy, pink skin underneath.

It really did surprise me because although I’m an organic mama, I do take good care of myself and my skin and I pay attention to my feet in good weather because I’m a sandals and Birkenstocks kinda girl.  So I keep the feet and hands looking nice and I keep my nails painted.

My feet didn’t have a thick build-up of skin from neglect or anything like that.  My palms appeared normal, too. Then the sloughing began.

At first, I thought it might be from where I was applying it with my hands and I assumed I just needed to scrub them better after putting the oil on. But once my feet started peeling, I knew that couldn’t be the issue because I have never applied the oil to my feet.

I have no idea why the magnesium oil would cause that reaction, but it has been a welcome one. And because I didn’t change any other things about my diet and supplementation routine, I must assume the magnesium is involved. Other people are reporting the same effect.

The magnesium oil feet peeling has been a delight. I’ve had nice, spa-like results without the expense of spa treatments. The Health and Wellness Magnesium Oil has become an inexpensive spa treatment for me.

Keratosis Pillaris

A reader e-mailed me to comment that they had read magnesium oil would improve keratosis pillaris.  Since my kids have it and high doses of Cod Liver Oil haven’t resolved it, I will soon begin applying the magnesium oil to their arms daily to see if it helps. Look for an update in a few weeks.

Have you used magnesium oil?  What effects did you have from it?  Did anyone else have any peeling skin?  I’d LOVE to hear any theories anyone might have on why it happened to me!

I was doing research to figure out why I was so out of control with PMS & having no energy & narrowed it down to my adrendals. 1st I have to eat right (not that we don’t eat the right foods, we are WAPF followers), I have to eat on a schedule 3 Xs a day with somke light snacks between bc I wasn’t it was reeking havoc on my adrenals (who knew!). I’ve added magnesium oil (which I make for pennies via Cheeseslave) also other supplements to support my adrenals like FCLO (which we take anyway), dissicated liver, sea kelp & making kefir water sodas. I just started last week & already notice I have more energy, I rarely need baking soda for deordorant & am almost looking forward to this coming cycle. I hope I don’t have the peeling thing but at least I know now.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that has the peeling skin on their feet. I had a bath and decided to scrub my feet with a pumice and granular scrub ready for lighter footwear and I smothered my feet in cream and put cotton socks on. In the morning I took them off and I had skin coming off everywhere. It was like I’d turned into a snake. I moisturiserised again and put the socks on and they’re still peeling like crazy. Do I keep putting the oil on my feet? I was told it’s the best place for absorption. I don’t want my body peeling. I’ve been sleeping better so don’t really want to stop but how long do they peel for? It’s not going to be attractive with flip flops on! Can anyone help? ??

I did quit putting it on my feet. I alternate through different fatty parts of the body now and that seems to work just as well for me as the feet.

I have been using the magnesium oil spray on the bottom of my feet for about a month. I went for a pedicure today, and my nail technician commented on my peeling feet. I think I will try it on another part of my body, but the oil has made a difference in my mood and sleep.

It does make a big difference when you’re magnesium deficient! Try rotating it around the fatty areas of your body and see if you can still get the benefits without the peeling feet.

I have the same problem with my feet peeling. I have stopped applying to my feet and hope the problem stops. There is no itching or pain but substantial flaking. Not attractive.

No idea on the peeling skin – I’ve never heard of that.

I DO know it works as folks who test have seen rbc values increase from transdermal application.

It’s easy to get serum levels up temporarily for any mineral/electrolyte, much harder to get rbc levels up – and it’s indicative of your body having enough mineral storage when your rbc levels are good.

    Have you noticed energy changes?

The reason I ask – I first ran across the idea of Mg supplementation via Dr. Sarah MyHill from the UK, who has done a lot of work on chronic fatigue and mitochondrial dysfunction.

She gives shots of Mg, but because they sting, they have to be loaded with lidocaine also. I’m OK with shots generally, having done insulin for several years, but didn’t like the lidocaine idea. She also likes a nebuliser application, but that seemed like something I’d be unlikely to keep up with. This is why I looked into transdermal application to begin with – if it’s easy, I’m more likely to do it.

She says anyone with even slightly low rbc values finds improvement in energy with the shots, even if that’s not the “main” thing wrong with them causing the fatigue.

I mix the salt up in water with a drop of peppermint essential oil in a spray bottle and use it after I shower. No idea how much I use. It’s “refreshing” and more like a beauty treatment than a supplement.

I haven’t found an increase in energy, but I have been a lot busier than normal with the launch of the eCourse. When things slow down here, I might find that to be different.

I just started using Magnesium Oil. I love the lowered body odor! I spray it on my stomach, arms, and underarms before I get dressed in the morning.

I have noticed that I have slightly more energy, or, rather, that myself and my feet are not exhausted after standing all day at work.

I have been using it for a while, but unfortunately, I’m not very consistent with it. I just forget! I usually spray it on my chest, stomach, arms, and thighs after showering. I have never experienced any burning, just a mild itching and a funny “sticky” feeling on my skin. Not a big deal.

I have also noticed the reduced BO, although I am still a bit scared to go deodorant-free. In the past I have tried every natural deodorant alternative – the crystal, coconut oil, etc. and NOTHING cut it. Maybe I’ll try again once I’m more consistent with the Mag oil.

About the feet…My whole life I’ve had peeling feet. The soles were always in some stage of peeling. It was gross, and so embarrassing. Well, just recently, I happened to look at the soles of my feet (something I tried to avoid doing as much as possible!) and they looked like BABY FEET!!!!! The soles were perfectly smooth, soft, pink, like they had never been for as long as I could remember. I don’t remember experiencing the dramatic sloughing-off, and didn’t experience anything on my palms, but the foot transformation was nothing short of miraculous! Until now, I had attributed it to the change in diet (finding out I was NCGI, and going GF/CF), but now I wonder if it was the Mag oil?

Thanks for posting your “weird” side effect, and don’t ever hesitate, because there might be someone out there who is “weird”, too!

I’m new to the discussion, but wanted to suggest trying Milk of Magnesia as a deodorant. I’ve been using it awhile now (just poured it into an empty roll-on deodorant bottle) and I’m amazed at how well it works.

Barbara, I suffered from aluminum toxicity and I had to go through chelation to recover. I used milk of magnesia on my face daily for years to absorb excess oil under my make-up. In looking at the issue, it appears as though the type of aluminum in milk of magnesia can be absorbed through the skin, so I wouldn’t recommend it.

          KerryAnn,
Do you have to do anything to detox anymore? I recently had my amalgams out and am thinking on chelation. Didn’t you have chelation for mercury also? What did you use for chelation? Also, I am dairy free. If I use magnesium oil, should I worry about not having enough calcium? I know you can’t give medical advice, but I am very interested in your story and your opinion.

          Thank you!

I did the Cutler Protocol. At the time, that was the best method for my situation out of what was available. I used DMSA and ALA- I did mine back before DMSA was made prescription only. I’m not up to speed on the currently available methods, so if I had to do it all over again today, I don’t know if that would be the best choice.

I haven’t looked deeply into the interplay between calcium and magnesium yet. I’m still trying to learn a lot in that area and get my own protocol optimized to get my hormones balanced. I’ll post more about it as I am able to work through everything.

          Hi KerryAnn,

I am wondering if you could point me toward some information about aluminum in milk of magnesia. I have always struggled with body odor, but no ‘natural’ deoderants ever work. I recently read about and have been using milk of magnesia and it works better for me than anything else I have ever used in my life! Of course that made me suspicious about what was in it. According to the label it has just magnesium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite and filtered water. I don’t like that bleach is in it and I’m not sure about the chemical makeup of the magnesium. I could not find anything about it when I googled it. Just that it has been used as a deoderant. This blog post comment is the first place I have found anything about the safety of using it as a deoderant. I would really appreciate any further information. I’ve been reading your blog about ferments and have been branching out reading more of your posts. Very informative posts. I appreciate that you seem to research things before just writing about them.

Jennifer, it looks like you’ve got the only brand that doesn’t have the aluminum in it? According to this site, it looks like most of the magnesium hydroxide products on the market also contain aluminum hydroxide. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000069/

Hi KerryAnn … I’ve also been experimenting with magnesium oils with good results. Deeper more restful sleep and reduction in asthma symptoms have been impressive so far. I also have keratosis pillaris, have had it my entire life. It greatly improved though not completely resolved. I would caution people about brands as I had a bottle I bought a few years back that made me feel kinda bad, so I switched to Ancient Minerals and used it for months without a problem.

looking at starting my 16 yr daughter on this – she is special needs & has horrible cycles with lots of clotting & its extra hard cuz she doesn’t understand & has to have help with it all – this alone seems like a reason to try the mag oil. Maybe I missed it, but why does this help in the cycle area?

Magnesium reduces cramping in all muscles, not just the uterus and some studies have shown that magnesium supplementation reduces cramping. I’ve met other women who stated their cramping improved when they went on magnesium, so that makes sense to me. http://kerryg.hubpages.com/hub/Magnesium-for-Menstrual-Health discusses it further and states it can help with other menstrual symptoms. Another site that discusses it is http://www.jigsawhealth.com/resources/magnesium-moms-women

So I’d say it might be worth the venture to see if it helps her.

I did not alternate places very often of where I applied the Mag Oil. I mostly put it on my lower back and while I experienced the lower body odor, after a while I broke out on my lower back in largish red “pimple” like things! They were larger than any pimple I’ve had in my life, maybe they were pustules. I discontinued the mag oil and they went away. Has anyone else had this happen? I think I will try again and change places of application. Thanks for sharing your experience with it!

This is just a guess, but the hands and feet are major detoxifier places in the body. Perhaps it was helping you to detox and your body decided it didn’t need the older skin that still had impurities.

I am very interested in trying out Magnesium Oil but I am 11 weeks pregnant. Is it safe to use during pregnancy? I read somewhere that getting too much magnesium during pregnancy can affect the baby’s teeth. So I wasn’t sure. How many sprays would you use on a 3 yr old child to treat keratosis pillaris? My daughter and I both have it. It has improved with FCLO but has not completely gone away.

Hi KerryAnn! I am new to MO but am thinking it might help my 3 year old. She has neutropenia (dangerously low neutrophil count) and after her last blood workup, she now has really low red blood cell count. I was doing some research and MO came up as a possible natural aid in raising the red blood cell count. Do you know much about this and where I might find some good info?

I use magnesium oil every night on my feet as it is very relaxing and helps me sleep really well…but… yes I have the peeling feet, really badly, always dry and I need to use cream, now I just did a foot soak and the peeling is worse than ever, sort of thick skin and a bit blistery and non stop peeling, I usually dilute the oil with water as well, I am getting a bit concerned as to whether I am allergic to the magnesium chloride, no one seems to have an answer for this.
If I stop the magnesium it does eventually go but takes ages, my podiatrist said it looks like a fungal thing but he didn’t really know.

I back off on the magnesium oil. I stopped until it went away, then went back on it with the dose cut in half, then adjust from there to where I don’t peel at all. Judging from the behavioral cues my husband was picking up, it looks like I was doing too much and my feet and palms peeling is a sign I’m getting too much.

I’ve been using Magnesium oil on my skin for almost 2 months. I also started peeling and shedding skin on the bottom of my feet. No bleeding or infection of any kind was present, just a lot of shedding skin hanging there. Very weird!! Any way I’m sleeping so much better. I apply Castor oil on the bottom of my feet to deal with the shedding and dry skin. I’ve been spraying Mag on my Tummy and underarm. Love this stuff, just can’t figure out why it dries the skin so much.

    Keratosis pilaris!

Yes- I have had it since as far back as I can remember, at least since teens,
and it was not until I was 42 yrs that I found a good solution that got rid of it about 90% :
a quick scrub with baking soda in the shower, and coconut oil after.
I did that about every second day, and it worked better than anything else I tried.
I was very happy with it!

However- since starting spraying with magnesium oil – I no longer have to do this at all, magnesium does the job, and does it even better.
    I think it is amazing!!

My son also has the keratosis, (he is 10) and I have been rubbing the magnesium on him, and it is basically gone.

So yay- yes, i have found it very effective, and , super easy.

It settled down after just a few weeks of daily spraying and my feet haven’t felt so soft and pretty in years! I’m also sleeping so much better and more deeply after years of insomnia. I didn’t know about the reduced body odour and hadn’t noticed it so far, so will be glad of that bonus too. Thanks ladies.
