Packaged spice mixes are expensive. Not only do they cost more, they often contain things you don’t want- fillers, anti-caking agents, iodized salt, starches and other things you don’t want in your spice mixes. Anything other than spices in a spice mix isn’t good eats.
In my household, the spice mix we use most often is taco seasoning mix. I make this up in big batches and store it in a pint mason jar. Because my mix doesn’t contain salt, you’ll need to salt your food separately. For my family, we prefer one teaspoon of a good quality sea salt for every pound of meat.
Taco Seasoning Mix
4 Tbs chili powder
3 Tbs cumin
3 Tbs paprika
2 Tbs onion powder
2 Tbs garlic granules
Combine all ingredients. Use two tablespoons to replace a taco seasoning packet. Makes the equivalent of 7 taco seasoning packets.
To make one batch of taco meat, I brown one pound of ground beef in a skillet until no longer pink, then I sprinkle on two tablespoons of the taco seasoning mix, one teaspoon of salt and one-quarter cup of beef stock. Cook over medium low until the liquid is absorbed and the flavors are blended.
I purchase my spices in one-pound, bulk bags directly from Frontier Wholesale. Here is what I pay:
Paprika- $5.95 for 5 cups (22 cents per recipe)
Cumin- $6.95 for 4 cups (33 cents per recipe)
Chili powder- $6.40 for 4 cups (20 cents per recipe)
Onion powder- $4.60 for 4 cups (14 cents per recipe)
Garlic granules- $5.50 for 3 cups (23 cents per recipe)
Total Cost for one batch: $1.12
Total cost per packet equivalent: 16 cents
How much does a packet of taco seasoning mix? Frontier sells their packets at wholesale for $7.90 for 3.5 cups, which is equivalent to 28 cents per batch. If you purchase their little taco seasoning spice mix packet, you’ll pay $1.13 apiece, or $1.49 if you purchase it at a grocery store.
So if you normally purchase one packet a week, you will save $50.44 per year. If you purchase one pound of each spice, that’s only $29.40 and will make over 100 batches. Of course, you won’t use that many, but you’ll have plenty of spices left over to use in the rest of your cooking. Their spices stay good for a long time and have incredible, bright flavors. I only purchase my spices from them in bulk, I’m so happy with their quality.
