Christmas morning, we have sourdough cinnamon rolls or sticky buns.  I make them the night before and allow them to rise overnight in the fridge.  I also make these two drinks and stash them in Mason jars in the fridge.  Christmas morning, when everyone gets up, I pop the cinnamon rolls in the oven and pour the hot chocolate into a pan and put it on the stove on low.  By the time we’re done opening gifts, breakfast is ready to eat.  I really prefer it this way because it doesn’t require time in the kitchen to get a memorable breakfast made, knowing I’ll spend the afternoon in the kitchen cooking our big meal to eat around 1pm.  The kids feel like they’ve gotten a special treat but it didn’t put me behind and make lunch late and we got to eat breakfast instead of a hurried brunch so the big meal could be served in time.

The Christmas Mailer, including these recipes and the recipe for GFCF Cinnamon Rolls/Sticky Buns is available for purchase here.

Cold Eggnog

From the Christmas Menu Mailer

1 dozen raw eggs
½ cup rapadura or honey, or more to your taste
4 cups coconut milk or dairy cream
2 cups unsweetened almond milk or dairy milk
2 Tbs vanilla
½ tsp cinnamon
A good shake of salt
A sprinkle of nutmeg

Blend all in a blender and chill in a stainless or glass container overnight before serving.

Hot Chocolate

From the Christmas Menu Mailer

2 cups water, unsweetened almond or rice milk or dairy milk
¼ cup cocoa powder
¼ cup honey (or stevia, rapadura or a mixture, to taste)
2 cups (1 can) coconut milk or dairy cream
1 tsp vanilla

In a saucepan, pour a small amount of the water and whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Whisk in the rest of the water, honey and coconut milk. Heat over medium-low if using raw dairy, whisking occasionally, until the milk is as warm as you’d like. If you’re not using raw dairy, heat over medium until the mixture comes almost to a boil. Remove from heat, whisk in the vanilla and serve immediately.

Hi Kerry Ann! We just started a tradition this past Christmas to have sourdough cinnamon rolls and eggnog for breakfast on Christmas morning also. SD cinnamon rolls are the BEST cinnamon rolls I have ever tasted! And homemade eggnog….YUM!!! Reading your post has really put me in the mood for both of these treats. Your eggnog recipe sounds delicious. I’m going to bookmark it and give it a try sometime. Thanks for sharing!

Abi, you can do either. Personally, I use the whole egg.

Abi, it’s rich enough that I’ve never noticed a difference between the two.
